The time finally came to plant our first year of barley and hops. I got ahold of some Merit seeds, the cultivar that Anheuser-Busch developed, by trading some beer. We planted 1000 square feet of barley and 21 hop plants.
The hops selected were: Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, East Kent Golding, U.S. Hallertauer, Nugget, and Sterling. These hops are all vigorous growers and provide us with the ability to make any style of beer. Half of the hops planted are Cascade, the citruisy American hop that makes a quintessential pale ale.
