I’ve been homebrewing for over five years, and I’ve covered a lot of ground over the years, and even come up with a few techniques of my own. Now that I’m getting into the swing of things at the brewery, I’m going to begin offering homebrewing classes at the brewery once every month on Sunday. Every Sunday, Lee and I brew a batch on the one barrel system, but we also have set up a smaller five gallon system for test batches and demonstrations, using homebrewing equipment. The first class is scheduled for Sunday, September 29th, at 1 PM, and will last four hours. Tickets are $20, payable in advance or on arrival by cash or card, and space is limited to ten people.
Here’s a break-down of the material we will cover:
First hour: basic concept and techniques of all-grain brewing. Water-to-grain, mash PH, water adjustment, equipment.
Second hour: advanced techniques: oxygenating, temperature control, yeast harvesting, trouble-shooting, common homebrewing myths
Third hour: recipe formulation. Beer tasting of all the Crooked Run beers. Discussion of styles and ingredients.
Final hour: General Q&A, growing hops, using fresh hops, fruits, vegetables, spices.
